Don't just go eat at the River Walk or Mi Tierra. (If you have to eat at the River Walk, go to La Panaderia or Casa Rio.) But if you are more adventurous, I've got a few recommendations.
Here are a list of places that I, as a San Antonio local, recommend that are good, cheap, and relatively close to the convention center.

FOOD
Carnitas Loñja
Order a pound of carnitas, wash it down with a Topo Chico, and you're good to go. Small space with lots of outdoor seating.

The Little Taco Factory
When my brother and I first went here, we saw nothing but grandmas working the kitchen. We knew we found a place serving food that we grew up eating. Cheap. Legit. Closes after lunch.

COFFEE SHOPS
Gold
The owner, Jason, serves up, in my opinion, the best cup in the city from Wild Gift Roasters. Small shop that is also in an art space.

Brown Coffee Co.
Serious coffee for serious coffee drinkers. Their menu is simple (without milk and with milk) and there are NO additions or substitutions. You drink it how they make it because they know what they're doing. I love this place. They also roast in-house.

A coffee truck surrounded by other trailer shops and food trucks-even a barber truck! I digress. Really good coffee. But check hours first.
